Why do nerds tend to be unpopular in middle school and high school? There is a high correlation between being a nerd and being smart. So perhaps being smart makes you unpopular?

As Paul Graham points out in today’s nugget, this doesn’t seem to be a good explanation. After all, being smart doesn’t reduce your popularity in elementary school, and it certainly doesn’t hurt you in your adult life.
