How Many Steps Do You Need to Walk per Day?

Conventional wisdom has it that, in order to preserve your health, you need to walk 10,000 steps per day.

But, as Lindsay Bottoms points out in today’s nugget, published by The Conversation, this number is actually quite arbitrary: It originated in the trade name of a Japanese pedometer from 1965 that literally translates to “10,000 steps meter.”

Yes, there are significant health benefits to walking, especially if you spend much of your day sitting in front of a computer. But it doesn’t have to be 10,000 steps: About half that already does the trick.
